Separate three kinds of information
A vehicle history report, a test drive, and a mechanical inspection answer different questions. Records may describe reported events, a drive reveals how a vehicle feels, and an inspection examines its present condition. None should be treated as a complete replacement for the others. Organize your research so gaps are visible.
Arrange the inspection early
Ask the seller whether an independent mechanic can inspect the vehicle before you commit. Discuss the location, timing, access, and any inspection fee in advance. If transport is difficult, ask whether a qualified mobile inspector is an option. The Federal Trade Commission recommends an independent mechanical inspection even when a used vehicle has been inspected by the dealer.
Give the mechanic useful context
Share the listing, the vehicle identification number, any available records, and the observations you made during your drive. Mention noises or warning lights without trying to diagnose them. Ask what the inspection includes and what cannot be assessed. Time limits, access restrictions, and the inability to disassemble components can all affect the scope.
Ask for written findings
A written report is easier to review than a hurried verbal summary. Ask the mechanic to distinguish immediate concerns, routine maintenance, and items that need further diagnosis. Request estimated repair costs where appropriate. Match the report to the exact vehicle and keep it with the other records you are reviewing.
Use findings to ask better questions
An inspection does not guarantee future reliability. It gives you another source of information for deciding whether to proceed, seek clarification, or look at another vehicle. Unresolved issues deserve attention before the decision. Keep the report, any seller responses, and agreed work in writing so everyone is discussing the same findings.
